Think for a moment about what you know. Choose something that you know for certain and then try to undo the knowing.
Oprah ends her magazines with a “What I Know for Sure” section. In fact, her website has a list of 20 things that she knows for sure. It was the end of April and one of my best friends sent me the link to her list. So, I challenged myself to make a list and decided that my completed list would be the May Journal.
May sauntered in, snuck out and now that June has taken its place, I still don’t have my list.
But, I couldn’t let my stubbornness stop me from writing another journal and so here it is…my humble realization that I do not know 20 things for sure. It took me 60 days to admit this. During one weak moment, with Ben (and Jerry) by my side I decided to disprove Oprah’s 20 “Know for Sure” list. It was a futile act, further challenged by my inability to put the spoon down and the reality that Oprah really knows what she knows. Her list is great. And I agree with much of it; I just don’t know it for sure.
Which leads me back again to what I really know for sure. It’s a vicious cycle in constant accompaniment with a new side dish: Fritos, Mac and Cheese, Margaritas, KFC.
I asked you to think of something you know and to choose something you know for certain and then undo the knowing because it is what I had to do to get to this point. It is the formula I had to use in order to tell you what I know for sure. If the undoing was fearful, if it brought me to the edge and took away the colors of my world, then I knew I knew…but if I could truly see the other side of what I thought I knew for sure, then I knew I didn’t know…
My list of 20 is a list of 1 but that 1 is all encompassing.
Love wins, whatever kind love it is. Love of a song, love of life, the love of believing in someone or something. It may take some time, but if I love it long enough, the love will conquer. So I continue to love. I love my fears: from failure in this business to not understanding Twitter. And I love the people who fight me, I love the judgment, the uncertainty, the lies, the disappointments, the anger, the lack but I love each moment, each day. And when I get to share my new single with you, you will know exactly why I know what I know for sure…
